Beef and Beer held for Doug McGuigan
By Deputy Chief Earl Taylor

On Saturday April 12, 2008, the members of Pomeroy Vol. Fire Co. No. 1 gathered together to hold a Beef & Beer benefit for Fire Chief Doug McGuigan. Earlier this year Chief McGuigan was diagnosed with cancer; with this saddening news, the members of Pomeroy wanted to give back to Chief McGuigan for so much that he has given to the community and the fire company. What better way than a Shave-off, Beef and Beer event with lots of door and raffle prizes? Mother Nature gave way to beaufitul weather as many community members came out and enjoyed the day. A surprise visit from Chief McGuigan made the day that much more special to all those that came out to support him and his family. The amount of support not only from the fire company members but also from the community helped to make this day a great success. Both the Assistant and Deputy Fire Chiefs, EMS Captain, President of the Pomeroy Vol Fire Co and many more participated in the Sh! ave-Off in efforts to show their support. To much of our surprise, Chief McGugian also participated...pictured below! Smiles filled the banquet hall, the tents and the engine bays on this wonderful day as we came together to support a leader, a Chief and a friend.

Chief McGuigan is a forty-year plus veteran to the fire service and has been a noted figure to the company since his father and two uncles also served as Fire Chiefs to the Pomeroy Fire Co. Doug has served the fire company in positions Engineer, Chief Engineer, Lieutenant, Captain, Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief, & Trustee. We ask if anyone has the time, drop in and see him at home he is always receptive to visitors.

As the word of the event made its way around, the fire company was inundated with support from the community members, businesses in the community and the neighboring fire companies. A big thank you goes out to Triple Fresh Market in East Fallowfield who supplied the Beef & side dishes, the Atglen Fire Company for the baked potatoes, Christiana Fire and Atglen Fire Companies and Elverson EMS for the standby crews and The Sadsburyville and The Westwood Fire Companies for their donations. A special thank you to all the fire companies that helped this event be sucessful for advertising on their websites! Without your help we would not have been as sucessful as we were! From the members of the Pomeroy Vol Fire Co No 1, we would like to extend a special thank you the Fundraising Committee, specifically Jollene and Todd Pechin and Mike Short for all their work for this event. And a great big thank you to Mrs. McGuigan for bringing Doug out to help make our day that much more special!

Chief,
You are a leader, who has taught so many of us tough lessons in life. You are a friend who has listened and helped us work through various situations. You are loved and cared for as I am sure you saw on this great day! We love you and wish you the best. You are in our thoughts and prayers!
With love always,
The Members of the Pomeroy Volunteer Fire Co.
